Freelance Rate Calculator

Side hustle hourly rate when you have a W-2 job

If you freelance next to a job, your side income is taxed on top of your wages: at a higher bracket, with self-employment tax, and without withholding. That changes the rate you need.

How a job changes your tax

Income tax is progressive, so every additional dollar is taxed at a higher rate. The calculator therefore takes the tax on your freelance profit as the difference: tax on all income minus tax on your wages alone. Your wages also use up part of the Social Security wage base, so the 12.4 percent portion stops earlier. Your employer withholds tax only on the job, so the tax on side income is yours to pay in quarterly estimates.

Example with the default values

Next to a $60,000 job the rate drops to $28.91 when the wages cover part of your goal, and rises to $99.16 when they do not.

Same assumptions as in the calculator, with a $5,000 total monthly need:

ScenarioTake-home needed from freelancingHourly rate
Freelancing alone (default values)$5,000$89.05
+ W-2 job: $60,000 wages, of which $4,199 per month reaches your account$801$28.91
+ the same job, but its pay is spent elsewhere (your goal stays $5,000)$5,000$99.16

In the second case the job covers part of your need, so the rate falls despite the higher bracket. In the third case the need stays the same: the rate then rises compared with freelancing alone because your profit is taxed at a higher marginal rate.

Health insurance with a job

If your employer offers a plan, you usually do not need your own coverage, so enter 0 under health insurance. The self-employed health insurance deduction is also not available for months in which you could join an employer plan.

What to watch

  • Estimated payments: plan quarterly payments, or raise your withholding at work through Form W-4.
  • Time: next to a job you often have only part of the week. Use realistic working days and a lower billable share.
  • Your case: the calculator is a simplified estimate for ordinary filers. Have a tax professional check special situations.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a side hustle hourly rate?

Add your gross W-2 wages as a row of type W-2 wages under Other income, optionally with the part that reaches your account, set health insurance to 0 if your employer covers you, and read the rate.

Do I pay more tax on side income?

Your freelance profit is taxed at the bracket your total income reaches and is also subject to self-employment tax, so the tax on each side dollar is usually higher than on a dollar of an equivalent main income.
